In the book 'Everyday Engagement: Making Students and Parents Your Partners in Learning' by Katy Ridnouer, parents should be considered teachers' closest allies in terms of building student achievement.
She discusses the way in parent roles have traditionally been seen as limited to being complainers, victims or the boss (p.2). There has been much research over many years about the positive impact of parental engagement in their children's learning. Eccles and Harold (1993) say that over time researchers have documented the power of connections between home and school, to build student success, including; 'higher levels of achievement measured through standardized test scores, and with gains in factual, conceptual and attitudunal aspects of learning'. |
